Balboa (varying levels)
Rodney Young + Emily Ernst
Now that vintage style swing music is back in the mainstream, dance nights are popping up all over town. With the up-tempo music, crowded dance floors, and sometimes tiny venues, there is no better dance than Balboa to get you moving in situations just like these. In fact, it was born out of those very elements. Close connection and itty-bitty footwork are characteristic of this dance, making it ideal for space and energy conservation, while still swingin’ to the hot rhythms of the 1930s… and the 2010s!

slow-balboa sunday workshops (all levels)
Rodney Young + Rachael Ries

Vintage style swing music is back in the mainstream and dance nights are popping up all over Portland. Whether the music is live or DJed, there is always a great variety in the music, including varied tempos! When the music slows down we need a dance that matches the rhythms of these sweet slow tunes...enter, Slow-Bal. Slow Balboa originated in Southern California in the 1940's, was created specifically for slow songs. If you already know some Balboa it will be a help, but there are lots of fancy new steps and most of the Balboa moves have been retooled so you can elegantly take advantage of the slow music and still look like a kick ass dancer! Beginners also welcome! No partner required.
We are offering this class in two, 2 hour workshops to allow students to really dive in and get the feel for this style with a week of practice in between. Come to one workshop, or both. The material will vary in both workshops, so you can benefit from taking just one, but they are designed to be taken together :)
collegiate shag workshop (all levels)
Haily Holt + Mike Wilson
9/9 SUN 5:30-7:30p $25 online, $30 in studio
Collegiate Shag is an energetic partner dance that was popular in the 1930s and 40s. It has a history similar to other jazz and swing era dances like Lindy hop, Charleston, and Balboa, but its unique double-rhythm six-count basic and fancy footwork flourishes distinguish it from other styles of swing and other dances that use the 'shag' name such as Carolina Shag or St. Louis Shag. It is currently in the middle of an explosive revival in current social swing dancing circles, and Portland is the perfect town to do this dance justice, with all our fabulous local swing bands that often play uptempo tunes. But whether you're dancing out on a Thursday night, or in your own living room with friends, Collegiate Shag is a great go-to no matter the situation! Hop to it!
This 2 hour workshop format allows you to really dive and dig in to some techniques that you can carry with you wherever you go.
